新年快乐 恭喜发财

The Year of the Dragon is upon us. Big celebration in Chinatown tonight at Midnight. Fireworks, dragons and lions. Celebration!

Here is some important fast-breaking info to help get you through the next fifteen days:

Mandarin Chinese:
新年快乐 (xīn nián kuài lè, pronounced “sheen nyen kwy luh”) = Happy new year! (literally “The new year comes fast!”)

恭喜发财 (gōng xǐ fā cái, pronounced “gong shee fah tsy”) = Wishing you a prosperous new year! (literally “May you have much joy and wealth!”)

Cantonese Chinese:
新年快乐 (san nin faai lok) = Happy new year!     (literally “The new year comes fast!”)

恭喜发财 (gung hei faat choi) = Wishing you a prosperous new year!     (literally “May you have much joy and wealth!”)

The most common auspicious greetings and sayings consist of four characters, such as the following:

  • 金玉滿堂     Jinyu mantang – “May your wealth [gold and jade] come to fill a hall”
  • 大展鴻圖     Dazhan hongtu – “May you realize your ambitions”
  • 迎春接福     Yingchun jiefu – “Greet the New Year and encounter happiness”
  • 萬事如意     Wanshi ruyi – “May all your wishes be fulfilled”
  • 吉慶有餘     Jiqing youyu – “May your happiness be without limit”
  • 竹報平安     Zhubao pingan – “May you hear [in a letter] that all is well”
  • 一本萬利     Yiban wanli = “May a small investment bring ten-thousandfold profits”
  • 福壽雙全     Fushou shuangquan – “May your happiness and longevity be complete”
  • 招財進寶     Zhaocai jinbao – “When wealth is acquired, precious objects follow”

Now give me a red envelope.

Happy Observed New Year!

Pop Haydn at Santa Clarita

This video is from the 2011 Cowboy Festival. I have performed at this festival since 2005. Magill and I love it and always have a great time.

I will be appearing once again at the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival held this coming year on April 19 – 22, 2012 at Melody Ranch Movie Studio.

I will be performing just on Saturday and Sunday at the Medicine Show Stage, along with Professor Dave Bourne and the incredible John Reynolds. I will be doing some magic and pitching the Amazing Miracle Oil.

It is a wonderful festival, with lots to see and do. It is great for the kids, with farriers, leathersmiths, rope spinners, campfire cooks, and other demonstrations of the skills of the range, as well as cowboy poetry readings, and lots and lots of cowboy music. There is great food to eat, and the ambience is wonderful–it is the set of the HBO show Deadwood. It is a wonderful place to come dressed up in Old West duds and take photos. Steampunk is welcome.

The Senior Pitchman’s Reunion

In 2008, the first Senior Pitchman’s Reunion was held in Las Vegas. All pitchmen over 60, no Johnny Come Lately’s. These are the men and women who pitch svengali decks, kitchen gadgets, mops, shamwows, knives and all the other products that are demonstrated and sold in flea markets, carnivals, streets, malls, mega-stores and television.

Nancy Magill and I attended this wonderful convention and interviewed the participants for hours, with Magill manning the camera. We released those in a School for Scoundrels DVD “The Senior Pitchman’s Reunion.”

In 2010, we went to the second reunion and will be releasing a DVD soon from those interviews.

Billy McComb — Palace of Mystery 2005

This is the incredible Billy McComb the year before he died, performing his classic comedy and magic in the Palace of Mystery in the Magic Castle in Hollywood. This is a lesson in performance technique from a true master. He makes it seem off the cuff and effortless. He was the best.

Here is a clip from the movie “Presto” of Billy doing the bird cage vanish uncovered and without camera tricks:
