Pop Haydn presents Tesla Girl

Something Brand Spanking New in the 21st Century!

Pop Haydn in the 21st Century! is coming to Magicopolis.

This show, presented March 7th and April 4th in Santa Monica, will demonstrate three Steampunk/Magical devices…but unlike most artistic “replica” devices, these all actually work under scientific test conditions.

This is new for Steampunk, and new for Magic. These are not boxes that do magic, these are magical devices that have histories and stories that are untold in the show, and can only be hinted at:

The Teleportation Device which sends a dollar bill (borrowed, signed, corner torn and serial number noted) into a freely chosen pristine raw egg under scientific test conditions

The Tesla C-2000 a highly modified version of a Tesla Coil, which bends the force of gravity in such a way that a 110 pound girl can withstand with one hand the full weight of any large man in the audience and can not be lifted barefoot from the floor by anyone in the audience.

The Sphere of Destiny, also known as Cleopatra’s Eye, which will answer any question the audience dares to ask with deadly accuracy and insight.

I have followed Steampunk for some time. I was a featured performer at the World Steam Expo in Dearborn for two years. I was a panelist on Steampunk at Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo, and was featured in the book Steampunk Gazette. This is something new in Steampunk.

I am a past Vice President of the Magic Castle, and a six-time “Magician of the Year” at the Magic Castle, and nominated again for Stage Magician of the Year this year. This show is something new in Magic.

It is made for the 21st Century by people who are not originally from the 21st Century.

We have live music, magic, comedy, and the wonders of radio-magnetism.

It is not a reenactment of vaudeville, the medicine show or anything else.

It is History being made in the Present.

Hope you can make it!

It is going to be a hoot!

POP HAYDN LECTURE

February 24th, 2013

Magic Castle, Hollywood

3:00 PM — 5:00 PM

For Magician Members Only

The Magic Castle’s favorite character, Pop Haydn, will offer a new lecture on “Acting in Magic.” Pop Haydn is a six-time recipient of performing “Magician of the Year” awards at the Magic Castle, and is a past vice-president of the Magic Castle.

With his own persona firmly in place, Pop will address the basics of acting, character development and the theater of magic.

He’ll speak on what magicians need to know about the actor’s craft to improve magicians’ performances and strengthen their magic.

Pop will also be performing in the Close-Up Gallery of the Magic Castle, Feb 18-24.

Daniel Boone’s Knife-Swallowing Trick

Daniel Boone

Daniel Boone

My dear friend, Kurt Freitag brought me a lovely present while working the Magic Castle this week, a book on Southern Folklore. In it I discovered an interesting selection from a book about the early frontier, telling a tale of Daniel Boone using sleight of hand to get out of trouble:

“Boone, according to James Jall, was once resting in the woods with a small number of his followers, when a large party of Indians came suddenly upon them and halted–neither party having discovered the other until they came in contact. The whites were eating, and the savages, with the ready tact for which they are famous, sat down with perfect composure, and also commenced eating. It was obvious they wished to lull the suspicions of the white men, and seize a favorable opportunity for rushing upon them. Boone affected a careless inattention, but, in an undertone, quietly admonished his men to keep their hands upon their rifles. He then strutted towards the reddies unarmed and leisurely picking the meat from a bone. The Indian leader, who was somewhat similarly employed, arose to meet him.

“Boone saluted him, and then requested to look at the knife with which the Indian was cutting his meat. The chief handed it to him without hesitation, and our pioneer, who, with his other traits, possessed considerable expertness at sleight of hand, deliberately opened his mouth and affected to swallow the long knife, which, at the same instant, he threw adroitly into his sleeve. The Indians were astonished. Boone gulped, rubbed his throat, stroked his body, and then, with apparent satisfaction, pronounced the horrid mouthful to be very good.

“Having enjoyed the surprise of the spectators for a few moments, he made another contortion, and drawing forth the knife, as they supposed, from his body, coolly returned it to the chief. The latter took the point cautiously between his thumb and finger, as if fearful of being contaminated by touching the weapon, and threw it from him into the bushes. The pioneer sauntered back to his party, and the Indians, instantly dispatching their meal, marched off, desiring no further intercourse with a man who could sallow a scalping knife.”

From Wikipedia:

“Daniel Boone (November 2, 1734 [O.S. October 22] – September 26, 1820) was anAmerican pioneer, explorer, and frontiersman whose frontier exploits made him one of the first folk heroes of the United States. Boone is most famous for his exploration and settlement of what is now Kentucky, which was then part of Virginia but on the other side of the mountains from the settled areas. Despite some resistance from American Indian tribes such as the Shawnee, in 1775 Boone blazed his Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap in the Appalachian Mountains from North Carolinaand Tennessee into Kentucky. There he founded the village of Boonesborough, Kentucky, one of the first American settlements west of the Appalachians. Before the end of the 18th century, more than 200,000 European people migrated to Kentucky/Virginia by following the route marked by Boone.[2]

“Boone was a militia officer during the Revolutionary War (1775–83), which in Kentucky was fought primarily between the American settlers and the British-aidedNative Americans. Boone was captured by Shawnee warriors in 1778, who after a while adopted him into their tribe. Later, he left the Indians and returned to Boonesborough to help defend the European settlements in Kentucky/Virginia.

“Boone was elected to the first of his three terms in the Virginia General Assemblyduring the Revolutionary War, and fought in the Battle of Blue Licks in 1782. Blue Lick was one of the last battles of the Revolutionary War, coming after the main fighting ended in October 1781.”

Pop Haydn in the 21st Century!

Pop Haydn is coming to Santa Monica March 7th and April 4th!

Pop Haydn in the 21st Century!  is a wonder-filled evening of fun, with good-time music, song, dance, comedy and magic.

Pop Haydn demonstrates his incredible Teleportation Device and he also pitches his Amazing Miracle Oil and his new Magnetized Water–a modern miracle for health and energy!

Pop appears as the great seer–the Diviner of Destiny. He will take time to answer audience questions about the future–about health, love, money and lost objects–with the aid of his magnetically-energized crystal ball.

This show features the sassy song and dance of our Louisiana Songbird  Bonnie Gordon, the fire magic of sultry sorcerer Sophie Evans, and the good-time music of Professor Dave Bourne and the Medicine Show Band.

Pop Haydn presents our intrepid electronaut Tesla Girl, who will bend the very force of gravity itself while immersed in a radio-magnetic field generated on stage by Pop Haydn‘s Tesla C-2000–a highly modified version of a Tesla Coil.

Pop Haydn in the 21st Century!  is a lot of fun and is geared toward an adult audience–but it’s still family-friendly.

Steampunks, time-travelers, dandies and other 19th Century expatriates are welcome–no weapons, please.
